Florida has been in the midst of an opioid crisis, which is currently claiming more than a dozen lives per day statewide. Because of this disturbing death toll, the Florida governor declared a public emergency nearly a year ago. The problem continues today, but Florida lawmakers are hoping to make headway with new legislation. This, along with better knowledge of reputable drug treatment centers, will hopefully bring positive change to the sunshine state.

Opioid Overdoses

Florida’s overdose epidemic has been mostly due to synthetic opioids that are flooding the streets. The biggest offenders include synthetic opioids such as Fentanyl and Carfentanil. The amount of overdoses due to these drugs are overwhelming first responders, hospitals and even morgues.

Worst Opioids in Florida

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the opioids that caused the most deaths in Florida in 2016 include:

  • Fentanyl
  • Morphine
  • Fentanyl analogs (such as Carfentanil)
  • Heroin
  • Oxycodone

New Florida Law

New legislation that was recently passed in Florida places tougher limits on most painkiller prescriptions and gives more money to treatment programs. It also requires physicians to check the state prescription database. The law even contains some of the nation’s toughest mandates on initial prescriptions for Schedule II painkillers such as Oxycontin and Fentanyl.

Drug Users Flock to Florida

Another reason why Florida’s overdose numbers are so high is because of the many people who come to Florida for their world-renowned treatment centers. Those who do find themselves in reputable centers can start their path to recovery and find success. But because of this influx of people looking for treatment facilities, many fraudulent centers have been popping up to take advantage of those seeking help. Unfortunately, this means some people who come to Florida can fall victim to corrupt operators and end up in an even worse situation.

Do your research and be weary of treatment centers with the following:

– Generic websites
– Offers to pay for travel expenses
– Offers to pay for insurance coverage
– Centers that do not ask for in-depth information of the patients
